Skin reactions are mainly the physical changes that might take place on your skin because of the radiation therapy treatments that you are undergoing as part of your treatment for cancer. Skin reaction takes place mainly in the area that is being treated. For example, if the chest area is being treated with radiation therapy, you might get skin reaction just on the affected part of the chest and not elsewhere on your body. Therefore, it is very important to understand what the possible complications might be if you don’t pay attention to what is happening to your skin while you undergo your radiation treatment for breast cancer.
One of the things that you need to consider if you want to avoid complications arising from the effects of radiation treatment on your skin is to make sure that you apply moisturizer before and after your therapy sessions. The reason behind this recommendation is to make sure that the dead cells that are stuck to the surface of your skin are removed and replaced by new skin cells as quickly as possible. If you don’t remove these dead cells and replace them with new cells right away, they might end up clogging the skin pores and ultimately leading to more complications. The main advantage of using moisturizer right after your radiation treatment is that it will not only help you in removing the dead cells that are stuck to your skin but also prevents the production of excess sebum (oily condition) that can block the skin pores. So, when you apply moisturizer right after getting treatment for breast cancer, you can easily avoid complications such as acne and blemishes.
Other complications that might occur because of radiotherapy include redness, swelling, itching, dryness of the skin and inflammation. These side effects of radiotherapy are considered to be normal side effects of radiotherapy and usually go away after a few weeks. If the radiotherapy you had done was of low grade or had not been done well, then these side effects may lead to complications. If your side effects worsen or become intolerable, then you must consult your doctor and rush to the hospital for treatment. In any case, if the side effects last longer than expected or get worse, then it is better to wait and see if your body gets used to the treatment and cures itself without requiring further radiation treatment.
