Beauty – What It Is
Beauty is a quality we only receive from God. God’s beauty is the one quality which is in itself beautiful. God’s goodness is Beauty itself, because that goodness is something so pure and beautiful, so to give up one’s own goodness to accept the goodness of others is not as it should be. Beauty is the virtue which, to use Proverbs 13:24, a sinner is called upon to bring forth. Beauty is the life of the soul, but this is not attained by a lifetime of gloomy labor on the streets. Beauty has the qualities of freedom and lightness, a woman’s beauty being the best of all. This is why our mother says to us, “God made you so that you could look good”.
Beauty is the most valuable of all qualities in a human being. Beauty allows us to turn and face a better destiny. In a word, beauty allows a human being to realize the absolute worth of every human being. Beauty is the highest quality of the spirit, because it comes only from God. Thus it is the most perfect. The simplest and finest of our physical qualities, that which we need the most, is beauty. Beauty gives birth to beauty, and beauty is nothing else but something infinitely divine.
Beauty in person is something far more lovely than any tangible thing or action can be. Beauty seems to emanate from a mirror, that something which comes from nothing in particular but itself. To behold the beauty, is to be turned into the most beautiful of creatures and beings, to have been created for God. It is a perfect quality, which make everything beautiful, and also the ultimate principle for the development of what comes next. Beauty is to us, not merely a quality, but a principle, a divine ordering principle. Beauty is a divine principle which makes God appear in reality, in the universe.
