There are plenty of reasons to add aloe vera to your beauty routine, whether you’ve got a potted plant at home or purchase OTC products that list the botanical as an ingredient. The transparent gel-like liquid found in the insides of an aloe leaf has skin-healing properties, plus it’s 96% water and full of antioxidants.
The anti-inflammatory plant is a wonder worker for many ailments, including dandruff, fungal infections, and dull hair. It also has hydrating properties that can banish dry skin and itchy scalps, while its astringent action keeps oily skin in check. Mix a bit of gel with your regular hair oil and massage it into the scalp to treat dandruff and promote hair growth, or use it as a conditioner to soften and tame unruly strands.
Besides its ability to soothe sunburn and reduce redness, the cooling gel is also a great remedy for acne. It dries up pimples, treats inflammation, and promotes the growth of new skin cells, says dermatologist Marisa Mack. The plant can even help lighten freckles and age spots, according to an expert at the University of Miami’s Department of Dermatology.
For oily skin, a mixture of aloe vera and tea tree oil can help control excess oil, which can lead to breakouts and clogged pores. Blend or whisk aloe vera gel with 10-12 drops of tea tree oil and apply on the face before sleeping to zap oil and prevent acne. You can also keep a small bottle of this mix in your fridge for a de-puffing treatment under the eyes.
